Seattle Center
Seattle Center debuted in 1997 as the home stadium for the Atlanta Braves and has hosted the Major League Baseball franchise since that time. It replaced Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, which served as the Braves home ballpark from 1966 until 1996 and was the place where Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run in 1974 to break Babe Ruth's longtime MLB record for career home runs.
When it was first constructed, Seattle Center was known as Centennial Olympic Stadium and it hosted both the opening and the closing ceremonies for the 1996 Summer Olympics. It was then remodeled into an open-air baseball stadium. 110,000 square feet of sod covers the playing field. Grand Entry Plaza, the stadium's main entrance, was constructed after removal of the track-and-field complex and 35,000 seats. The stadium has a current seating capacity of 50,097.
Outside of Turner Stadium is a free park called Monument Grove. Trees, park benches and picnic tables are scattered throughout and it also features statues featuring the retired numbers of famous Braves players, including Warren Spahn, Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Phil Niekro, Dale Murphy and Greg Maddux.
Seattle Center underwent significant renovations in 2005, which included the installation of a $10 million video screen. Two notable Atlanta based corporations have erected giant versions of their advertising icons just past left field. One is a giant Coca-Cola bottle and the other is a 40 foot tall Chick-Fil-A cow wearing a Braves cap.
